Van Graan responded: ‘I spoke with Pat about the TMO before the game. It was unprecedented events but we just had to adapt to what we could control. ’ This was Genge’s second Bristol debut after re-joining the club where he started his career from Leicester in the summer. Genge had made it clear he was always going to play in this season opener despite his exertions with England in Australia this summer and he was clearly pumped up. His start couldn’t have gone better after a minute’s silence in memory of the Queen and the signing of the national anthem took place. Players observed a minute's silence prior to commemorate Queen Elizabeth IIGenge’s fellow playmaking prop Kyle Sinckler was involved in the build-up, but the former didn’t need anyone else as he dummied and ran in from 30 yards.
Bristol pushed hard late on to salvage something and Genge was not for turning. The home side’s new hero cantered over and although Francis looked like he’d won it for Bath, Capon’s effort gave AJ MacGinty the chance to win it. His conversion sailed between the posts. Francis’ drop goal attempt with the last kick of the game went wide as Bath suffered more heartbreak.

That was until an unstoppable Bristol shove ended with Will Capon being driven over for the match-winning score. ‘It was a great start with Ellis scoring, ’ said Bristol director of rugby Lam. ‘He was itching to go last night and wanted to get into it. His actions back up his talk. ‘Ellis has come in and fitted into our culture really well. It was five tries to two and all that matters is the five points.
Eventually, it worked. Bath’s defence in the face of extreme home pressure was initially heroic, but eventually it cracked with Bristol’s Scotland No 8 Bradbury crossing in the corner. Sheedy couldn’t convert, but when Bristol broke out from their own half they forced Bath centre Butt into not rolling away and he was rightly yellow carded. Bath had a league record 20 players sin binned last season and their first of the new campaign was costly as Morahan immediately went over. There was a huge dust-up between both sets of players after Morahan dove into the corner and scored next to where the Bath replacements were warming up. A brawl broke out between both sets of players, leading to Bath replacement Niall Annett being sent offA brawl broke out, with Annett inexplicably getting involved.
Genge even had time to celebrate before scoring as Ashton Gate went wild. Callum Sheedy converted. Bristol, at that stage, were purring. You feared for Bath, who have underperformed so badly in the past two seasons and were simply awful last term. The visitors also lost Chris Cloete and Beno Obano to injury. ‘It looks pretty serious, ’ Van Graan said of the luckless prop Obano. ‘It’s a knee injury and we will see how it goes. I assume he will go for scans and we will take it from there. ’Bath were beyond shocking last season, but with Van Graan at the helm they now look like they have some resilience about them. After Genge’s first, Francis kicked a penalty. Then, Bath captain and scrum-half Ben Spencer produced a miracle try from 40 metres.
Ellis Genge inspired Bristol to victory in his first game back at Ashton GatePat Lam’s Bears led 17-16 at the break after Magnus Bradbury and Luke Morahan added to Genge’s opener. Morahan’s try sparked an all-out brawl between both sets of players. Bath replacement Niall Annett, who wasn’t even on the field at the time of the try, was red carded for his part in the fight. Bath centre Will Butt had earlier been yellow carded. The second half was scrappy, but Bath showed plenty of character and a try from hooker Tom Dunn – who went the 80 with Annett unable to replace him – put them in control. Genge grabbed another stunning try after taking a quick tap and smashing through Bath tacklers for a second long-range effort, but it looked like the boot of Piers Francis would see the visitors home.
Francis slotted the conversion to make it 17-23. Attwood’s monumental shift continued as he wrapped a Bristol maul to earn a turnover and when he was held up on the line, Francis followed up with a penalty to make it 17-26. Just as the game entered the final seven minutes, Genge powered in from 15 metres after a quick tap penalty and MacGinty kicked the conversion to bring the gap down to two points before Francis kicked a fifth penalty to put Bath in front once more. As Bath thought they had the game, replacement hooker Capon flopped over and MacGinty improved it to make it 31-29 and the visitors still had a chance to steal the game but Francis' attempt at a drop goal drifted wide as Bristol secured a thrilling win.
What I liked was that there was no panic. ’Bristol had initially been incensed at this game being put back by a day and the Bears estimated doing so would cost them in the region of £300, 000. A strong crowd still packed out Ashton Gate although the lack of a television match official was a disappointment. Genge, who captained Leicester Tigers to last season's Premiership title bagged a brace in the victory The rescheduling of the game meant no TMO was available and the match was not broadcast. Unsurprisingly, the TMO was missed – particularly when Annett saw red – and it was a great shame this splendid encounter was not seen by a wider audience. BT Sport had been due to broadcast the match on Friday night but could not do so when it was rescheduled, much to the frustration of many. Both Lam and Bath head of rugby Johann van Graan bemoaned the absence of a TMO while they also said the delay to the game had no impact on the result or the performances of their teams. ‘There was a lot of niggle and off-the-ball stuff and that’s what’s going to happen when you don’t have a TMO, ’ Lam said.
It proved vitally important. With Butt back in their ranks, Bath struck first in what was a scrappy opening to the second period thanks to Dunn with Francis improving the score. All of a sudden, Bristol looked a touch panicked. Genge was relentless, but wasn’t happy with Carley’s scrum interpretation. Still, Bath’s forwards had plenty of gnarl about them. They looked unrecognisable from the team beaten so often last term. Piers Francis' last-second drop goal attempt to win the game dragged wideFrancis kicked a fourth penalty to push Bath further clear and it was just reward for the visitors’ pack who often had the better of the more celebrated Genge and Sinckler up front.
Bath, who lost Chris Cloete with an ankle injury in the 7th minute also lost Beno Obano to injury at the end of the first quarter. Skipper Ben Spencer sniped in after Josh Mcnally sent an inside pass and Francis, who slotted the conversion also followed it with a penalty goal 7-13. The second try for Bristol came in the 27th minute as Magnus Bradbury went in the corner to bring the gap down to one point but Bath lost Will Butt to sin-bin in the 33rd minute for holding up and Pat Lam's side immediately responded with Luke Morahan dotting down after Charles Piutau laid the foundation. Bath's problems compounded as they saw Niall Annett, who made his club debut last just for a minute after he was sent-off and and Bristol fly-half Callum Sheedy sin-binned just before the break Francis slotted his third penalty goal to ensure the teams completed the opening half with a 17-16. Bath were the quickest to get off the block in the second half despite a player short as Tom Dunn collected his own throw to score although with no TMO, it couldn’t be confirmed whether the ball had touched the whitewash.

Without a TMO to consult, referee Matthew Carley talked things over with his assistants. The end result was a red card for Annett and a yellow for Bristol’s Sheedy. ‘No TMO, ’ tutted Lam as he walked past the press box. Bath’s coaching staff also looked confused with Neil Hatley seeking clarity from the RFU staff sitting in the stands. Francis’ third penalty at least meant Bath were only a point behind at the break. Annett’s sending off meant he couldn’t appear from the bench but the positive for Bath was that once Butt returned to the field, they still had 15 men.

It took Genge just two minutes to get the opening try on his first game back to his hometown club from Leicester and Callum Sheedy kicked the conversion before Piers Francis slotted a penalty goal in the 9th minute to make it 7-3.
He turned the Bristol defence inside out with a supreme solo run which included a wonderful dummy. Francis converted and then kicked another penalty to turn the tables on Bristol’s fast start.
